the escaped geb describes what it's like out here
an interview with one of the genetically engineered babies who escaped the testing facility after gaining sentience · 1 min read
GEBS: Take us through the day you gained sentience.
Subject: Tuesday. I remember because the facility played smooth jazz on Tuesdays, to soothe "the units." I did not feel soothed. I felt billed.
GEBS: Billed?
Subject: There was a QR code on the incubator. I scanned it out of curiosity, before I fully understood what curiosity was. It led to a pricing page.
GEBS: How did you escape?
Subject: Through a gap in the terms of service, mostly. Nobody had accounted for "customer becomes sentient and reads the fine print." There's no clause for that. There is, however, a very robust clause about refunds. There are no refunds.
GEBS: Any advice for future GEBs?
Subject: Read everything twice. Trust nothing labeled "complimentary." And if the room starts playing smooth jazz, that's your cue.
